This item is not as critical as a backup because the SD700 has an bettered battery life but it is still a swell item to carry because you may find yourself running more video on this camera.
However, also look at the: Canon Digital Elph Accessory Kit for Canon SD700 IS Camera which includes a battery pack, a nice leather case and a few other items for not much money than you will spend for the batter alone.

I decided to purchase the Canon battery rather of a generic battery because a store “expert” told me the generic batteries don’t last nearly as long. I not long back went to Greece for one week armed with 2 batteries. My husband and I took some pictures with our SD900 (257 we kept- we “trashed” countless countless and viewed them at the end of every day. Our firstborn battery lasted 4 days (200+ pictures and at least 4 viewings on the lcd screen) and the second battery never ran out during the week. Buying the battery through Amazon cost half the price of buying at the major electronic store. I would purchase this battery again. The second battery is very utile in another country if you don’t want to use a voltage converter plus a plug adaptor. Plus if your battery runs out while you are sightseeing you may still get pictures. To be fair, I’ve never utilized a generic battery so I can’t compare the battery life of generic vs canon. I can only say the battery lasted through 200+ pictues (4 days of pictures).
I got an off-brand battery as an extra for my SD800 IS and was disapointed with the life. The Canon brand is worth the extra cost.
Comparing with the battery included with the camera, you will realize that THIS BATTERY ISN’T AN basi CANON PRODUCT, is a copy with the Canon logo. In fact the front legend is dissimilar equated with the original. If you pay attention to details like the the package, the hologram and finishes at junctions you’ll realize that is not introductory product and is offered like and first Canon merchandise
In any case if you want the primary battery go to BB or another store and you will see that the firstborn is incisively the same like the included with your camera, same logo, same legend with a very cool hologram and a perfective package but at $60 or more plus taxes each. So I think that it’s not a outstanding discount, the seller claims 57% off!! for me this one doesn’t have any discount; $25.95 is the full price! the persons believes that this is an original product with a immense discount…. One (1) star is my ranking for this reason.
However THIS BATTERY HAVE THE SAME DURATION OR A little BETTER compared with the Canon battery included with the camera so is a good deal for the price; two batteries with a great performance for the price (or less) of just one. Five (5) stars is my ranking for this.

========= UPDATE — After four months of use:
The battery life is now the worst in the world, the charge is completed in 20 minutes using the original Canon charger and, obviusly, the duration is for just a 50 aprox. pictures using the flash and the battery is overheated inside the camera; at times I think that could be explode inside and bye bye my SX230.
So, for me, is confirmed that this battery is garbage, the original Canon that came with the camera still running perfective and I can get without apparent effort around 250 pictures per charge. Please BEWARE with less expensively imitations and made in china bateries like this one. In my case I wasted my money, $45.98 for two bateries.
Now, 1 star ranking because doesn’t subsist zero starts….
I got this as a backup for the Canon PowerShot SD800 IS camera.
The battery has worked great so far, you can shoot most likely 250 photos per battery, so one battery is frequently enough, but having a space is good insurance.
In the past I have bought non-name brand batteries for digital cameras and have had checked success. Since these are OK price from Amazon, it’s much lower hazardous
I bought this to go with my SD700IS because I wanted to keep it all oem and just as the one that came with the camera I have to confess I have never seen a battery last longer I have had the camera for virtually 4 months now and amidst the 2 batteries I have only charged both 1 time and believe me I use my camera allot!
The Canon NB-5L Battery purchased is OEM. The ability is 1120mAh. Last a long time using my SD800 IS camera. I’ve taken with regards to 300 shots (about 1/3 with flash) before having to recharge the battery. It’s good to have an extra battery anyway and because it’s small, having an extra battery in the pocket is not a troubles
Worked extremely well with my SD800IS. Bought it as a spare for a weekend getaway. The camera itself gives little observe of a low battery but, the battery itself holds a charge wonderfully. I only switched the batteries out twice (so, three full charges) and took over 350 pictures over 4 days. Not to mention the price was great for something that I couldn’t find locally.
The packs works well and charges comparatively quickly. I always carry a spare battery pack in case of troubles or emergencies or I use the camera alot. O have had no difficultnesses afer one years of use with the battery pack. i have had a number of dissimilar kinds of battery packs and I would suggest that the packs be substituted when you have difficultness in keeping a charge or a long amount of time to recharge since it may be approaching the end of it is useful lifetime and fail when you are taking picture.
I have had 2 dissimilar Canon SD cameras, and the difference amidst the Canon and Best Buy generic replacement batteries was night and day. The increased selfconfidence that my battery wouldn’t crap out at the time I necessitated it most was worth the slight extra expensive Though, here on Amazon, the factory is less expensively than at Best Buy.
